Shopify + Thinkific: How We Built a Hybrid Webshop with Products and Online Courses
Alpar TorokWhy a Hybrid Webshop?
More and more businesses in Romania are looking for solutions to sell more than just products. Customers don't just buy objects; they buy experiences and knowledge. That's why we increasingly see the demand for a hybrid webshop—a combination of a classic online store and an educational platform.
A recent example is the project developed by us at Dalbe Digital Agency, where we integrated Shopify and Thinkific to offer both personal development courses and associated physical products within a single ecosystem.
First Steps: Documentation and the Partner Program
Although our team has extensive experience with Shopify, Thinkific was a new platform for us. We started with the official documentation and discovered that Thinkific has a Partner Program. We applied, were accepted, and went through the onboarding materials.
This gave us access to detailed resources on how the integration works, as well as clarity regarding the platform's limitations. For example, courses can only be listed in specific ways depending on the chosen plan. In our case, we used the Basic plan, which meant that access to courses was possible exclusively through Shopify.
How the Course Creation Logic Works
An important detail that was initially a source of confusion: the course creation and publishing process is unidirectional.
- Course creation happens only in Thinkific. You cannot create the course directly in Shopify.
- Publishing in Thinkific triggers synchronization. When a course is published, Thinkific automatically creates a blank product in Shopify.
- The blank product becomes the "bridge." This product is associated with a Shopify product ID, which is the unique connection point between the course and Shopify.
- Final configuration takes place in Shopify. Once the blank product exists, you can set the title, images, price, and description, but the essence of the connection remains the ID generated by Thinkific.
Initially, we tried to configure the courses as independent products in Shopify, but these attempts did not work. Only after we understood that everything revolves around the product ID did we manage to establish the correct link and make the integration work.
Challenges and Solutions
While the documentation was good, reality put us to the test. We had several unsuccessful attempts, tested different configuration scenarios, and learned through experimentation.
The biggest challenge was understanding the "blank product" logic—the empty product automatically sent from Thinkific to Shopify. This is not a bug, but the mechanism through which the two platforms communicate. Once we decoded this flow, the remaining steps became much clearer.
Launching with 3+1 Online Courses
After configuration, we launched the site with 3+1 online courses alongside traditional physical products. Now, customers can:
- Buy a course just like any other product;
- Add both physical products and courses to the same cart;
- Receive instant access to the Thinkific course after payment.
This integration transformed the store into a complete hub: education + products, all in one place.
Lessons Learned
- Documentation helps, but real testing is essential. Without experimentation, we wouldn't have understood the product ID connection.
- Partner onboarding makes a difference. Thinkific's materials saved us valuable time.
- The course creation flow must be well understood. Blank products and the ID link are not intuitive at first glance.
- The market demands hybrid solutions. Clients want to combine products and educational services.
- Transparency in work. The actual development hours (excluding onboarding and support) totaled 64h, a significant effort for a robust setup.
Conclusion: More Than Just a Webshop
This project showed us that a webshop doesn't have to be just a product catalog. It can be a space where you sell both knowledge and practical tools in a single experience.
For businesses in education, wellness, sports, or personal development, a Shopify + Thinkific integration can be a real growth strategy.
At Dalbe Digital Agency, we believe in clear and functional solutions, not just theory. If you're thinking about a hybrid setup, we can show you how it works in practice.
