The Small Shopify Details That Will Cost You Later If Ignored
Alpar TorokIn most of the Shopify projects we take over, we see the same thing: okay design, good products, but poor visibility. Not because "SEO doesn't work", but because the basics aren't done correctly or at all.
Handle, Title, Image ALT, Meta Title, and Meta Description are treated as secondary fields. In reality, they are the very foundation.
Even in recent projects, such as Ecostil.ro, we insisted that all these elements be sorted out before any advanced optimization. Because if the foundation isn't right, whatever else you build on top will yield limited results.
The Handle is not just a URL
In Shopify, the handle defines the page URL. At first glance, it seems like a technical detail. In practice, it directly influences the structure and clarity of the store.
Poor example:
/products/product-123-final
Good example:
/products/elegant-black-dress
In our projects:
- we define clear handles based on the real product name
- we avoid unnecessary words or artificial structures
- we don't change already indexed URLs without proper redirects
We've seen cases where chaotically changing URLs led to a direct loss of traffic. Not immediately, but visibly over time.
The Title must say exactly what you're selling
The Title is the first thing both the user and Google see.
Poor example:
New product
Good example:
Elegant black satin dress
In our projects, including Ecostil:
- we rewrite titles to be clear and relevant
- we avoid internal names or codes
- we align the title with how people actually search for the product
A poor title not only fails to help SEO, but it also creates confusion for the customer.
Image ALT text is not optional
Most stores have images with no ALT text or completely useless texts.
Poor example:
image1
Good example:
elegant black satin dress front view
What we actually do in our projects:
- we fill in ALT text for relevant images
- we describe the image naturally, without exaggerations
- we use terms that actually make sense for the product
It's not just about SEO. It's also about accessibility. And, in some cases, a source of traffic from Google Images.
The Meta title is what the user sees on Google
The Meta title shouldn't be confused with the page Title. It's the title that appears in search results.
Poor example:
Home
Good example:
Elegant black satin dress | fast delivery in Romania
In our projects at Dable:
- we write different meta titles for every important page
- we focus on clarity, not keyword stuffing
- we avoid duplication between products or collections
It is one of the easiest things to do and one of the most ignored.
The Meta description influences the click
The Meta description is the short text displayed below the page title in search results. It doesn't push you directly up in Google, but it influences whether someone clicks or not.
Poor example:
Buy now
Good example:
Elegant satin dress, ideal for special events. Fast delivery and easy returns.
In practice:
- we write descriptions that clearly explain what the user will find
- we avoid generic or copied texts
- we focus on real benefits
If you don't fill in this field, Google will display something chosen automatically. Sometimes it's okay. Often it's not.
What you should never skip in Shopify
Whether you're working on a product, a collection, or a page, always check:
- the handle (clear and stable URL)
- the title (correct page description)
- ALT text for images
- the meta title (optimized for Google)
- the meta description (designed for clicks)
These are simple things, but that's exactly why they are treated superficially. And when they are constantly ignored, the problem is no longer small. It becomes a habit that affects the entire store.
From experience
In most Shopify projects we take over, the problems don't come from complicated things. They come from simple details, ignored for too long.
That's why, in recent projects like Ecostil.ro, we started exactly here: structure, titles, ALTs, and correctly implemented metadata.
Not because it's "best practice," but because it works.
